The Courtney Research Group focuses on engaging students by making learning *more* enjoyable. We host “Game Night” events the week before exams, where students can interact with games centered on organic chemistry topics. To support student learning and involve them in an active learning process, we have gamified several topics in organic chemistry, including resonance, stereochemistry, acid-base, and synthesis. Students who have taken the course previously serve as peer facilitators to answer questions and assist if needed. Recognizing that students learn in various ways, our focus was to gamify exam topics utilizing a variety of methods including escape rooms, tactile games, and digital experiences.

Decreasing Student Stress
Traditional grading schemes, as utilized across higher education, have in recent years been criticized by students and educators alike for significantly increasing academic tension, enhancing student stress levels, and perpetuating extrinsic rather than intrinsic motivation. Although grading exclusively on a point system has historically been used to measure student achievement, alternative strategies more focused on student learning can help aid students to focus on areas that require improvement and further understanding. Borrowing ideas from various grading styles, including mastery and competency grading, the Courtney Research Group has developed and implemented an exam retake system. Current research focuses on the effectiveness of the exam retake system and analyzing student feedback.
